Scholarship for Refugee and At-Risk Researchers Bremen

Have you had to flee your country, or is your academic work under threat? We support you in continuing your research or academic qualification in Bremen. The Scholarship for Refugee and At-Risk Researchers Bremen enables a temporary stay at a state university in the State of Bremen or at an institute of the U Bremen Research Alliance.

 

The application is a two-step application:

  1. application for risk assessment (find the form below)
  2. final application for scholarship – You'll receive the link after submitting the application for risk assessment.

The risk assessment will be issued by "Scholars at Risk" (SAR). By submitting the form below you consent to your data being transfered to SAR. Your data will be handled confidentially and according to the GDPR.

 

This application for the Risk Assessment is the first step of your application for the scholarship and has to be submitted by Oktober 25, 2026. The link to the second step, the application for the Scholarship will be given in the mail you'll receive automatically after submitting the following form.

 

Please be aware that the deadline for the application for the Scholarship is November 12, 2026.

What we offer!

  • Up to 3 scholarships per year: usually 2 for early-stage researchers and 1 for postdocs
  • €1,700 per month (early-stage) or €2,300 per month (postdoc)
  • Up to 12 months of funding, with the option to apply for an extension

On request, up to €5,000 in additional funds, e.g. for language courses, coaching, training or research materials

 

Who can apply?

  • Researchers from all disciplines who had to flee their home country because of war or political or religious persecution. The escape must not have taken place more than 3 years ago.
  • Researchers at risk who are still in their home country. You must be registered in Bremen when the scholarship begins.
  • Your research project must fit into an existing research group at a university in Bremen or at an institute of the U Bremen Research Alliance

Not eligible:

German citizens, "Bildungsinländer:innen" (persons who completed their schooling in Germany), dual nationals with access to a safe country of residence, and anyone already receiving comparable funding.

What you need:

  • Filled in questionnaire for Risk Assessment which the Academy will send to Scholars at Risk in order to issue a risk assessment: Questionnaire
  • Risk Assessment which the Academy will request from the Scholars at Risk Network (SAR)
  • A commitment from a professor in Bremen to host or supervise you (a letter of intent is sufficient for the application)
  • Proof that you have begun an academic qualification; postdocs need proof of a completed doctorate
  • Documents must be in German or English, or come with an officially certified translation.

The program is run by the HERE AHEAD Academy on behalf of the Senator for Environment, Climate and Higher Education.

In order to apply for the scholarship, please fill in the following form and upload the Questionnaire. We, the Academy will send your data to Scholars at Risk in order to receive your individual Risk Assessment.

In accordance with the GDPR, your data will be shared only with Scholars at Risk for the purpose of preparing the risk assessment. You have the right to have your data deleted at any time. In that case, the application cannot further be considered.
